F AlW-3 POWER UNIT SHIPPING CONTAINER - SAFETY ANALY

\\'f,

UNIRRADIATED AlW-3 POWER UNIT IN AN AlW-3 POWER UNIT SHIPPING CONTAINER;-REQUEST FOR NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION CONCURRENCE AND CERTIFICATE OF ' COMPLIANCE '

Naval Reactors requests Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) concurrence and a certificate of compliance for shipment of an unirradiated A1W-3 power unit in an AlW-3 power unit shipping container. The shipping container consists of a group of integrated components which attach to an A1W-3 power unit (reactor core) and protect the power unit from adverse environmental or accident conditions during shipment and storage. Since the power unit contains a large quantity of unirradiated fissile material, a Safety Analysis Report for Packaging (SARP) has been prepared and is enclosed with this memorandum. The safety analysis demonstrates that shipment of an AlW-3 power unit in an A1W-3 power unit shipping container complies with Code of Federal Regulation requirements (10CFR71) for Fissile Class III shipments of Type B quantity fissile material.

Naval Reactors considers that shipment of an unirradiated AlW-3 power unit in an AlW-3 power unit shipping container complies with Code of Federal Regulation requirements (10CFR71). Therefore, Nuclear Regulatory Commission concurrence and issuance of a certificate of compliance is requested.
