s I ) I MURR RESEARCH DIRECTLY RELATED TO MISSOURI -- JULY 1979 -_ JUNE 1980 j G Studies on High Impact Polysterene for Monsanto on SANS. l 9 Development of Cd-115/In-ll5m generator for Mallinckrodt Nuclear. ] 9 Development of neutron transmutation doping of semiconductors for the semiconductor civision of Monsanto + Corporation, St. Peters, M0. f 3 9 Activation analysis of physical evidence for Missouri law enforcement agencies. Work on gunshot residue, glass, hair and paint has aided in solving numerous murder and rape cases. 9 Research on chromium concentrations in blood serum has been used to study possible treatments for diabetic l children in Central Missouri. G The study of selenium in livestock, using activation analysis, may lead to supplementation with selenium for treatment of several diseases related to selenium deficiencies. ( q G Trace elements in early Indian bones excavated near Truman Dam may provide information on diets and nutrition of early Missourians. 1 i G The use of non-radioactive elements - such as cerium - as tracers, followed by activation analysis, has provided much new information on forage digestibility and rate of passage in sheep and cattle. 9 Trace element analysis of flint and chert used by Missouri Indians for tools and arrowheads is contributing ' new information on the trading patterns of these people.
L f L N l} r a MURR RESEARCH RELATED TO ENERGY DEVELOPMENT AND CONSERVATION -- JULY 1979 - JUNE 1980 } O Fusion is identified as the major source of energy in the 21st century. Scientists at the MURR are developing a I beam of neutrons which will have a spectra similar to the neutron spectra in a fusion reactor. These will then l .I be used to study materials damage and flux measurement technique development associated with a fusion power ^l source. k 4 g l i O Neutron transmutation doped silicon is used in the fabrication of very high power semiconductor devices which are used in controlling and switching functions in power plant grids by the electric power industry. The NTD technology has produced a higher quality device which allows these functions to be performed more economically. T 1 l l y-O The study of radiation damage effects on the fatigue properties of materials will yield information of use to the l fusion power reactor program. In a fusion power reactor the confinement walls will be subjected to high periodic l t mechanical loading and also radiation damage. It is, therefore, important to understand the relationship between [ } these two phenomenon. I ) O Research aimed at evaluating the mobilization of hazardous trace elements from fly ash disposal sites into the environment has made significant progress. New techniques developed may lead to more accurate and realistic i estimates of possible harmful effects. i l O cemented carbide rock drilling bits are used for exploration and production of oil and gas as well as for mining ore. Research with Reed Rock Bit is aimed at increased service life to reduce drilling costs. I ( O Development of a reactor waste heat system to provide space heating for a new addition to the Research Reactor Facility. q 2 O Evaluation of system to heat all of the Research Reactor Facility with reacter waste heat. f 1 l l 1
7 h I l MURR RESEARCH RELATED TO ENERGY DEVELOPMENT AND CONSERVATION -- (CONTINUED) O The search for suitable anode materials for high energy and power density lithium sulfur battery systems has focused attention on some intermetallic compounds because of their relative stability compared to pure liquid lithium. B-LiAl is a promising material due to its light weight, availability and relatively high mobility of lithium atoms. O Activation analysis of boron leaching from fly ash will aid in the evaluation of any potential environmental distribution of this element from coal combustion. l O Development of MURR Fuel Management Program. I O Research conducted on increased loading of MURR fuel elements; f Advantages of Increased Uranium Loading of Fuel Elements j e Conserve natural resources e Reduction in spent fuel storage and shipments e Reduction of safeguards threat o Economic advantages O Facility heating conversion to reactor waste heat - under contract to George Butler Association of Kansas City i for preliminary study and report plus design of system. Grant proposal submitted to DNR for 50% funding, r l
