SUMMARY
OF MEETING ON MARCH 29, 1982 REGARDING VERMONT YANKEE FEEDWATER N0ZZLE CRACKING On March 29, 1982 the NRC staff met with the Yankee Atomic Electric Company (YAEC) and the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Corporation to discuss findings at the Vermont Yankee plant from recent feedwater nozzle inspections, and plans for licensee compliance with staff requirements issued in NUREG-0619 dealing with BWR feedwater nozzle cracking.
YAEC presented data showing that the manner in which Vermont Yankee is operated involves substantially fewer thermal cycles and snaller differences between feedwater temperature and reactor coolant water temperature than were used as a basis for NUREG-0619 conclusions.
Continuing favorable inspection results at Vermont Yankee and a recently installed leak detec-tion system were also described. Because of the favorable operating conditions, good inspection results, and leak detection capability, VYNPC plans to continue operation with the existing interference fit spargers.
The staff considered the licensee's program as acceptable for the short term. The staff will decide as to the acceptability of the licensee's program over a longer term sufficiently in advance of the Spring 1983 refueling outage that licensee outage planning will not be inconvenienced unduly.
