Dear Sir:

Three Mile Island; Nuclear Station, Unit 1 (TMI-1)

Operating License No. DPR-50 Docket No. 50-289 Supplemental Response to IE Bulletin 79-01A In our response to IE Bulletin 79-01A dated September 27, 1979 (GQL 1202) we stated for the ASCO solenoid valves at TMI-l that "...the solenoid coil, the manual operator, and the resilient parts of the valve are being replaced in accordance with the time period established by the manufacturer and documented as the qualified life of the assembled component". The manufacturer has evaluated the qualified life to be 4 years inside containment with a normal ambient temperature of 140 F environment.

Since the ASCO solenoid valves are not located in this environment, a 4 year replacement is unjustified.

We have evaluated the qualified life of the ASCO solenoid valves in their TMI-1 environment and have documented it in the System Component Evaluation Sheets (SCEW) dated January 30, 1981 (LlL 026).

~ These SCEW sheets, provided as part of our response to IE Bulletin 79-01B, establish the qualified life of components based on analysis and/or tests for the plant specific environment which may be different from the generic manufacturer recommended time period. The replacement schedule is, then, reflected in the TMI-l preventive maintenance program.

3 Sincerely, f
