The Honorable Scott M. Matheson t
Governor of Utah rc # 82 o%
Salt Lake City, Utah 84114 iG
Dear Governor Matheson:
Thank you for your letter of February 8,1982 expressing the State's
- -interest in. pursuing an agreement with the Nuclear Regulatory Com.ission for regulating certain classes of radioactive material.
It is our understanding from discussions with Mr. Warren that the State is not seeking regulatory control over uranium milling and mill tailings at this time.
The NRC staff has furnished guidance material to your staff for use in preparing a proposal for an agreement with the NRC.
In addition, the NRC staff will provide assistance to Mr. Warren in developing the necessary elements of an agreement proposal.
The principal NRC point of contact on this matter will be our Region IV office in Arlington, Texas, Mr. John Collins, Regional Administrator, (817) 465-8225. Our Office of State Programs will work with Mr. Warren in arranging for training for State personnel in radiation safety, as appropriate, and in providing guidance and assistance as required.
We look forward to working with the State of Utah in its efforts to become an Agreement State.
Sincerely, a
Nunzio. Pal adino Chairman
