2.0 INTRODUCTION

f This report is in response to NRC inquiries concerning the Farr Company 40 MW fans (MPL Nos. QSZ51D002A-A and QSZ51D002B-B) supplied under Bechtel's Grand Gulf Spec-ification 9645-M-633.0 for the control room standby fresh air system units. During its Seismic Qualifica-tion Review Team (SQRT) walkdown, the NRC indicated that the lowest natural frequency had been overlooked. ^ According to the NRC review, the original analysis by McMahon Engineering Company (documented by Report No. 76J-ll67, dated June 28, 1977) had not considered the flexibility of the motor and fan support channels in the horizontal direction. Bechtel agreed to stiffen the fan support channels with bracing to eliminate the potential low frequency. In-ternational Energy Engineering (IEE) was retained to design the supplemental bracing, thereby validating the acceleration values used in the McMahon report. Revision 0 February 8, 1982

3.0 DESCRIPTION

( There are two 40 MW fan units, assembled by Farr Company, located at Elevation 133' Od of the Control Building. The units, which weigh approximately 850 pounds, consist of a horizontal motor and centrifugal fan with approximate dimensions of 34"x44"x48". Figure 1 illustrates the gen-eral configuration of the unit. The fans were manufactured by Buffalo Forge Company (Type MW, S,ize 40) and have 20 horsepower Westinghouse electric motors, which operate at a speed of 1800 revolutions per minute. The fan wheel is located at the end of a shaf t which can-tilevers from the motor. The motor base and fan housing, which are made of sheet steel, are mounted on a support frame. The frame consists of steel members made of bent plate and American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) structural shapes. The support frame members are joined by welded construc-tion, and the frame is fastened to the concrete floor of the Control Building through use of anchor bolts. Bolt-ing is also used to connect: (1) the motor to _ the motor base, (2) the fan housing to the motor ba'se and support frame, and (3) the motor base to the support frame. 3 i l Revision 0 February 8, 1982..- -

However, no increase in allowable stresses is used for earthquake loading. A value of 36 ksi is used as the yield stress for all struc-tural steel. Allowable weld stress for fillet welds is taken as 0.40 times the yield stress of the base metal. Bolts equal to or. greater than 1/2 inches in dia-meter are evaluated in accordance with the AISC Specification, Seventh Edition. Smaller bolts utilize the same procedure except that allowable stresses are taken from Marks Handbook, Eighth Edition. Anchor bolts are evaluated by comparison with the Farr Company recommended allowable loads. Bechtel Specification 9645-C-103.1, Rev. 8 is used for the design of Hilti anchor bolts. 4.2 Deflection j Although the stiffness of the shaf t was considered j in the McMahon report calculation of fan wheel de-fl ec tion, the stiffness was not included in this analysis. Therefore, the deflection used in this analysis is based on the McMahon report's allowchle deflection minus th'e deflection calculated in the McMahon report due to the stiffness of the sha f t. Thus the fan wheel allowable deflection for this analysis is.1369 inches. ~ Revision 0 l February 8, 1982 -.

4.3 Frequency t The fan unit must have natural frequency greater than 33 cycles per second to validate the use of acceleration values at the zero period accelera-i tion (ZPA). The centrifugal force applied in this analysis has been increased by a dynamic amplification factor (DAP) as described in Section 5.0. The DAP is based upon a natural frequency of 66.5 cycles per second as calculated in the McMahon report. 1 .i Revision 0 February 8, 1982, ~, , _,.. -. _ _ - - -.,. ~ -

~. 5.0 LOADING CONDITIONS I For the analysis, the motor-fan units were simultaneously subjected to three types of loads:

1) Deadweight
2) Seismic loads in three directions were taken from the Safe Shutdown Earthquake (SSE) response spectra curves for the Control Building at Elevation 133'-0".

The loads were based upon acceleration values corresponding to Zero Period Acceleration.

3) Operating loads consisting of fan torque and centri-fugal force due to fan. imbalance.

The centrifugal force was increased by a conservative dynamic ampli-fication factor (DAF), which was based upon the ratio of the fan unit natural frequency to the operating speed. Maximum stresses and deflections for the worst loading case were determined by algebraically combining deadw6ight, seismic, and operating loads. i i 4 i l I Revision 0 February 8, 1982 2 i

6.0 MATHEMATICAL MODEL i The STARDYNE computer program was employed for natural frequency determination and static analysis. The fol-lowing components were included in the computer model: Beam elements were used to represent both the support frame and supplemental bracing. Modeling for the sup-port frame skid members, including anchor bolts, was extended sufficiently beyond the fan housing to accu-rately represent boundary effects. The anchor bolts beyond the fan housing are considered fixed; the anchor bolts beneath the fan housing are considered pinned. Tri-plate and quadrilateral plate finite elements are used to represent the motor base. Stiff axial members are used to represent the distance from the centerline of the support beams to 'the interface of the motor base. Bolted connections are modeled as stiff beam-column members, because of clamping pressure exerted on the motor base near these bolts. The fan housing is modeled as a rectangular box shaped structure made up of quadrilateral plate elements. Al-though the two faces of the fan housing consist of in-terconnected plate and sheet s* eel, all cross sections are modeled as having uniform composite thickness. The internal components of the motor and fan, including the cross-sectional properties of the shaft and rotor, are not included in this analysis. The effects of the motor and fan masses are transferred to the motor base by means of rigi.d elements. Because the accel-erations are taken at the ZPA, their values are not dependent on damping. 7.0 COMPUTER PROGRAMS The STARDYNE computer program (1977 update of Version 3) was used for natural frequency determination and static analysis. STARDYNE is a public domain program which is readily available through Control Data Corporation (CDC). STARDYNE was the only computer program used in this anal-ysis. 8.0 ANALYSIS TECHNIQUE /RESULTS ( This section describes the procedures used to analyze the mathematical model of the fan units. Critical as-sumptions for this analysis also have been provided. The calculations for the analysis are enclosed with the report as Appendix A. ~ 8.1 Procedure To eliminate all modes of vibration that would produce a natural frequency less than 33 cycles per second for the motor-fan assembly, bracing members were added to the base skid and bent plates of the support structure. By ensuring that the lowest system natural frequency is above the ZPA of the SSE response spectra for the equip-ment location (El. 133'-0"), a static equivalent analysis is justified for structural evaluation. Accordingly, seismic qualification of the 40 MW fan unit is demonstrated (

Reference:

IEEE 344-1975). In addition to exceeding the 33 cycles per second requirement for static equivalent analysis, it is desirable to obtain a natural frequency of 66.5 cycles per second to validate the DAF used to generate operating loads. The Lanczos modal extraction algorithm was employed to extract the 10 lowest natural frequencies and mode shapes of the' motor-fan assembly. The lowest natural frequency was 67.4 cycles per second. Revision 0 February 8, 1982 A static analysis was performed combining dead-( weight, seismic loads in three directions, and operating loads. Stresses at the bolts, base framo, bent plates, supplemental bracing members, and welded connections are checked against appli-cable allowable stresses. Although some members stresses were checked by the STARDYNE computer ' program, individual calculations for combined axial and bending stresses are performed for channel shaped members. 8.2 Assumptions This analysis demonstrates that no low fre-quency modes of vibration are produced by the base skid and motor support members. The analysis qualifies the motor base, fan housing, and support members for the loading conditions described in Section 5.0. Qualification of the motor and fan is by others. The boundaries for the structural model used, in this analysis were considered as being at the fan housing-fan duct interface and at the first line of bolts to the floor beyond the plenum. All bolts (3/8" f) connecting the base skid (MC6 x 15.3 and C6 x 8.2) to the floor were treated as pinned support points (only trans-lation in (3) directions is restrained), ex-cept for the final line of bolts beneath the plenum which were considered fully fixed an-chor points (translations and rotations. fixed in (3) directions). Revision 0 i February 8, 1982 7 All offset elements between member centerlines ( at the base skid channel sections and support members were modeled as members with a finite stiffness but no weight. The internal components of the motor and fan were not modeled in this analysis. The motor and fan were treated as lumped masses with ro-tational inertias, located at their respective centers of gravity and connected by rigid ele-ments to the top of the motor base. The fan shaf t was assumed to be supported as a cantilever beam by the motor, i.e., no bearing of the shaft on either side of the fan housing. The actual stiffnesses of the motor and fan shafts were not modeled. k The 7" deep bent plate sections supporting the motor base were analyzed as channel sections, Theconnectionsbetweenthemotorbaseandhan housing frame were modeled as rigid elements, representing.the effects of the 3/8" $ bolts. The fan housing was modeled as being of rec-tangular shape for analysis purposes. The inlet and power side plate thicknesses were estimated by information provided in the McMahon Engineering report and through field measurement. Revision 0 February 8, 1982.,.

The inlet duct was evaluated as to its stiff-( ness characteristics and was found to be capa-ble of providing restraint against translation and axial rotation at its interface with the fan housing: For the dynamic analysis, (4) modal points lo-cated around the circumference of the fan hous-ing-duct interface were restrained against translation in (3) directions and rotation about the longitudinal axis of the components (X-axis). For the static analysis, these (4) modal points were restrained against translation in the X-direction and rotation about the X-axis. This results in maximum loads being transferred to the motor base and down to the support frame for purposes of checking stresses at that loca-tion. Also, this condition of restraint re-flects the loading induced by the erection sequence, where the inlet duct is connected to the fan housing last and does not assume any. of the dead load of the motor or fan. The four bolts connecting the motor base to the bent plates were assumed to transmit (3) forces and (3) moments between the two components at their respective locations; any other intercon-necting elements between the m..or base and bent plates were assumed to transmit Y-direction loads only. = Operating loads used for static analysis were assumed to consist of fan torque and centri-fugal forces resulting from a theorized fan unbalanced load. In the static analysis, new TS 3"x3"x\\" members (Item No. 12) were considered to have moment free ends at the connection to the base plate (Item No. 14) for the purpose of having a con-servative effect on the natural frequency anal-ysis. These connection points were considered as anchor points in the static analysis and the base plate was not included in the model. For the design of the base plate and bolts (Item Nos. 13 and 14), the maximum moments at the far ends of the TS 3"x3"x " members were used with the forces existing at the base plate from the anchor points. This resulted in con-servative loads for ca.lculating required plate and bolt sizes. The stresses on the motor base, reinforcing L 4"x3"x3/8" members, and the component sections of the fan housing were not checked against allowable stresses. The McMahon Engineering report had considered these items, and the static analysis showed no significant stresses at these locations. SUMMARY

OF THE ANALYSIS f With the supplemental bracing members, the lowest natural frequency of vibration due to the flexibility of the sup-port channels was calculated to be 67.4 cps. Therefore, stetic equivalent loads used in the McMahon report - based on acceleration values at the ZPA - are justified. As previously noted, deadweight, seismic, and operating loads were applied simultaneously for the analysis. The resulting stresses and deflection in the support frame, motor base, and fan housing were evaluated and found to be within allowable limits. 1 l .j-Revision 0 February 8, 1982 -
