SUMMARY
OF DECEMBER 2, 1982 MEETING ATTACHED TO NRC LETTER OF FEBRUARY 4,.1982 ENCLOSURES:
(1) WESTON GEOPHYSICAL REPORT:
" DESCRIPTION AND' EVALUATION OF BEDROCK STRUCTURE IN THE VICINITY i
0F BIDLAND PLANT UNITS 1 AND 2" (2) " REVIEW OF WESTON GEOPHYSICAL'S REPORT (FEBRUhRY 1982') ION TE BEDROC(4TRUCTURE IN THE VICINITY OF TdE MIDLAND PLANT" BY DR J F FISHER (3) " REVIEW AND COMMENTS ON THE TEBRUARY 1982 REPGRT BY WESTON GEOPHYSICAL' CORPORATION" BY DR A T CROSS On December 2, 1981, Consumers Power Company and its consultant, Weston Geophysical, met with the NRC Staff to discuss geology issues related to the Staff's OL safety evaluation review. During the course of the m (5) questions or requests for additional information'were identT.eeting five fied as listed in.the third enclosure to the referenced NRC meeting summary. Subsequent to the Deceaber, 1981 meeting, additional concerns were identified by the Staff for our response.
On March 3, 1982 a follow-up meeting was held with the Staff to present the results of a very compretensive investigation by Weston Geophysical of the possibility of faulting or other pronounced structural deformation in the vicinity of the Midland plant site. The results and conclusions ofothis ipvestigacion are documented in the Enclosure 1 report. The Weston j
Geophysical report (Enclosure 1) has been edited to specifically address the NRC's questions and ccacerns, which were also discussed in our March 3, 1982 meeting with the Staft.

In addition to the Weston Geophysical investigation and subsequent report (Enclosure 1), independent evaluations of the Weston Geophysical study and conclusions were conducted by two authorities on the geology of the Michigan Basin. These consultants are Dr James H Fisher and Dr Aureal T Cross, both professors of geology at Michigan State University. Dr J H Fisher brings a special knowledge of the Michigan Basin geology to this investigation, while Dr A T Cross's expert knowledge lies in the area of Pennsylvanian formations, such as those underlying the Midlard Plant site. Their independent evaluations of the Weston Geophysical report and assessment of the possibility of faulting in the vicinity of the Midland site are contained in Enclocures 2 and 3.
The conclusions reached by the three independent evaluations, represented by Enclosures 1 through 3, are in agreement upon and support the following general conclusions that:
(1) the LANDSAT satellite imagery for lineaments, which may be indicative of underlying geologic structures, does not represent reliable evidence for subsurface faulting in the Midland area; (2) evidence indicates that fold or fault structures of the pre-Pennsylvanian strata are not found extending into the overlying Pennsylvanian sequence for the Midland area; and (3) geologic structures found in the Pennsylvanian strata are nontectonic in origin. Therefore, we believe that it has been shown that there are no " capable faults" in the Midland vicinity which would cause earthquakes to be centered in the area.
This investigation further substantiates the conclusions already presented in Midland FSAR Subsection 2.5.3.
