Dear Mr. Schwencer:

The purpose of this letter is to revise Commonwealth Edison Company 's commitment regarding provision o f a six hour supply of reserve air for the Fire Brigade.

Reference (a) states, in part, tha t " At leas t a one-hour supply of breathing air in extra bottles shall be located on the plant site for each unit of self contained breathing apparatus. In addition, an on-site 6-hour supply of reserve air shall be provided and arranged to permit quick and complete replenishment of exhausted air supply bottles as they are returned. If compressors are used as a source of breathing air, only units approved for breathing air shall be used and the compressors shall be operable assuming a loss of off-site power. Special care must be taken to locate the compressor in areas free o f dust and contaminants."

Reference (b), Item 4, stated Commonwealth Edison Company 's position at that time as "... Ten (10) self contained breathing apparatus available for use by the fire brigade with a six (6) hour supply of reserve air.

Schwencer February 24, 1982 Reference (c) acknowledged Reference (b) by stating "...The applicant by letter dated December 18, 1981, has committed to provide 10 self-contained breathing apparatus for use by the fire brigade with a 6-hour supply o f reserve air in accordance with Section III.H o f Appendix R to 10 CFR Part 50. . . ."

Commonwealth Edison Company hereby revises its commitment to utilize an on-site air compressor in lieu of a reserve air supply for refilling self contained breathing apparatus air bottles.

LaSalle County Station currently has an on-site air compressor which is certified for breathing air. Outlets for supplying power to this air compressor are available in the plant from the following sources:

a) Maintenance Shop Area b) U-l Reactor Bldg. Trackway - Bus 234 Y-2 c) Off Gas Bldg. - Bus 134 Y-2 Electrical sources (b) and (c) above provide power assuming a loss o f of f-site power.

This revised commitment has been discussed with Mr. A.

Bournia of your staff, who has confirmed with his reviewer that this position meets the requirements of 10 CFR Pcrt 50, Appendix R,Section III.H (Reference (a)).
