2h-TON SPENT FUEL TEMISFER L.3K REDUNDA*IT SUPPORT ASSE' GLY Consumers Power Company letter dated Noventer 8,1976 notified the NRC of our intent not to proceed with modifications for mitigation of cask drops as presented in our submittal dated July 1,197h. This change in intent was pre-
'cipitated by the knowledge that the 60-ton spent fuel shipping cask (which was the basis for the ma,jority of the proposed modifications) would not be used in the foreseeable future.
This change in policy was considered acceptable for the 2h-ton spent fuel trans-fer cask, because it has a redundant support (safety sling) assembly that was designed to catch the cask in the event of a main hoist / hook failure. The 2h-ten spent fuel transfer cask redundant support system adequacy was established by a review of vendor drawings and the original purchase specification.
Recently, additional documentation of the design of the transfer cask redundant support system was sought. A review of plant records and the manufacturer's files indicated that the original design documentation coula no longer be re-trieved. The vendor indicated that it was not their practice to maintain design records for such a long period of time (approximately 20 years). Therefore, a verification of the adequacy of the redundant support system was performed. The results of this verification ( Attachment 1 - performed by MPR Associates, Inc) confirmed the adequacy of the spent fuel transfer cask redundant support system.
He manufacturer of the redundant support system (Whiting Corporation) has con-firmed the MPR Associates. Inc conclusicn.
