The NRC staff has performed a preliminary review of the spent fuel pool-reracking amendment request submitted on March 26, 1993, for the Duane Arnold Energy Center. We are submitting the enclosed request for additional information (RAI) in order to continue our review.

There will be other RAIs as the variout branches reviewing this request continue their reviews.

1.

Explain how the specification of an initial uniform average enrichment of 4.6 wt. % U-235 bounds all possible nonuniform fuel' and gadolinia variations which could result in the same fuel bundle average enrichment and core geometry k-infinity.

2.

Were any uncertainties assumed in the standard core geometry k-infinity calculations?. If not, why not?

3.

How many neutron histories were used in the independent check calculations performed with the KENO code?

Please provide your response as soon as practicable, and within no more than 45 days from the receipt of this letter.
