Dear Dr. Medford:

SUBJECT:

RESPONSE TO NRC BULLETIN 93-02, " DEBRIS PLUGGING OF EMERGENCY CORE COOLING SUCTION STRAINERS" - SEQUOYAH NUCLEAR PLANT, UNITS I AND 2 (TAC N05. M86615 AND M86616)

This letter acknowledges receipt of TVA's response dated June 9,1993, to NRC Bulletin 93-02 for the Sequoyah Nuclear Plant, Units I and 2.

The Bulletin was issued May 11, 1993, to all nuclear power reactor licensees.

It. requested licensees to identify fibrous air filters or other temporary sources of fibrous material, not designed to withstand a loss of coolant accident, which are installed or stored in the primary containment.

It also required I

licensees to take any immediate compensatory measures that may be required to j

assure the functional capability of the emergency core cooling systems,.and to I

take prort action to remove any such material.

TVA's response stated that fibrous material, such as described in the Bulletin, is not installed in the containment during normal power operation.

During outages, the use of equipment containing fibrous material is-controlled by a procedure for the particular job and its removal is controlled by a cleanliness inspection of the work area following its use.

In addition, a final containment inspection procedure is performed prior to entry into Mode 4 from Mode 5 that ensures containment clearliness.

Based on this information, we considar your response to be satisfactory.

Please retain any records of your actions in response to the Bulletin in the-event an audit is conducted.

Sincerely, Original signed by David E. LaBarge, Senior Project Manager Project Directorate 11-4 Division of Reactor Projects - I/II Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation cc: See next page 0FC:
