Dear Mr. Hanna:
This refers to your letter HHS-10, dated May 14, 1993, regarding the transport of steam generators containing low levels of radioactive contamination by the Yankee Atomic Electric Company (YAEC).
By way of background, YAEC is planning to transport four steam generators from their Yankee Nuclear Power Station, near Rowe, Massachusetts, to the disposal facility in Barnwell, South Carolina. The steam generators weigh about 300,000 pounds each. The transport will be primarily by rail, however, the steam generators will be transported by highway from the power station to the rail line at the Hoosac Tunnel, near the town of Florida, Massachusetts. The proposed route includes about six miles of roadway, and a privately owned bridge and earth dam.
You requested that the. structural and roadway analyses done in conjunction with the highway movement of the steam generators be transmitted to you for review by the State of Massachusetts or the Federal Highway Administration.
As requested, enclosed are four copies of the calculations for your use.
