Re:

Docket No. 70-3073 License No. SNM-1999

Dear Mr. Fauver:

As we discussed Wednesday, May 12,1993 Will Rogers, radiation safety officer (RSO) for the Cushing site, will be leaving Kerr-McGee Corporation (KMC). Ilis last day will be Monday, May 17, 1993.

Jeff Lux will be serving as interim radiation safety officer, enabling KMC to continue to perform certain activities at the Cushing site until a permanent RSO can be hired. Mr. Lux has completed the one-week course

" Principles of Radiation Safety", and a second one-week course " Radiation Safety Instrumentation and Compliance", both at Oklahoma State University, and has served as project manager for the Cushing site for approximately one and a half years.

Activities KMC plans to perform under the supervision of the interim RSO include:

- scoping surveys within "affected" areas,

- release surseys of " unaffected" areas, and

- release surveys of equipment and materials Methods to be used to complete the above activities will include exposure dose rate surveys, alpha surveys (both direct and smear), and shallow soil sampling, using hand sampling devices. No drilling rig soil sampling, excavation, sorting, or disposal of radiologically contaminated soils or building materials will be performed until a permanent RSO is on the job.

During the interim period, KMC will actively recruit a fully qualified RSO for the Cushing site. If you have any questions or comments, please call me at (405) 270-2534.

Sincerely, f
