This refers to the announced safety inspection conducted by Mr. R. A. McBrearty of this
office on June 21-25,1993, at Haddam, Connecticut. The results were discussed with
't
Mr. J. Stetz and others of your staff at the conclusion of the inspection.
Areas examined during this inspection are described in the NRC Region I inspection report
which is enclosed with this letter. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of selective -
examinations of procedures and representative records, interviews with personnel and
observations by the inspector. The inspection focused on activities related to the cracks that
l
were detected in three of four feedwater nozzles including nondestructive examination, weld
repair and Code required examination sample expansion, as required by ASME Section XI,
because of the cracked nozzles. Program implementation inspections are used to determine
that programs you have in place are effective in confirming the plant's acceptability for
continued safe operation and satisfy your commitments and regulatory requirements. We

found your program implementation satisfactory, and no violations were observed.
