Docket No. 50-457

Commonwealth Edison Company

ATTN: Mr. L. O. DelGeorge, Vice President

Regulatory Services

Executive Towers West III

1400 Opus Place, Suite 300

Downers Grove, IL 60515

Dear Mr. DelGeorge:

SUBJECT:

ROUTINE RADIOLOGICAL CONTROLS AND RADWASTE INSPECTION AT BRAIDWOOD

>

This refers to the inspection conducted by Messrs. M. Kunowski and R. Paul of

this office on May 24 to June 25, 1993. The inspection included a review of

authorized activities for your Braidwood Station, Units 1 and 2.

At the

conclusion of the inspection, the findings were discussed with those members

of your staff identified in the enclosed report.

Areas examined during the inspection are identified in the report. Within

these areas, the inspection consisted of a selective examination of proceduras

and representative records, observations, independent dose rate measurements,

and interviews. As discussed in Section 5 of the inspection report, the

quantity of radioactive noble gases and tritium released in gaseous effluents

has fluctuated widely since 1990, apparently because of leakage and repair of

various valves, the recent Unit 2 fuel leak, changes in analysis methodology,

and other influences.

We request that you review the gaseous effluent data

from 1990 to the present and estimate the relative contribution of the causes

of the fluctuation to the number of curies of gas and tritium released during

this period.

Please describe the results of your efforts in the Semiannual

Radioactive Effluent Release Report for July to December 1993.

No violations of NRC requirements were identified during the inspection.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the Commission's regulations, a copy of

this letter and the enclosed inspection report will be placed in the NRC

Public Document Room.
