Dear Dr. Selin:
I am interested in obtaining further information on your opinion regarding the potential for an embrittlement problem at the Palisades nuclear power plant operated by Consumers Power.
l l
l An April 14, 1992, New York Times article indicated that you believed that the Palisades plant was the most likely nuclear j
l power plant to be shut down because f.t suffered from this safety problem and would require a large i*tvestment "that could push it over the brink."
An NRC staff repurt, mentioned in a later New York Times article, April 2, 1993, does not mention the possibility of embrittlement at :?alisades, but lists 15 other reactors in need of testing.
I would appreciate it if you could provide me with the reasons for your position on April 14, 1992, and the reason that the Palisades plant was not on the April 2, 1993, list.
Thank you for your assistance.
Please contact me or my staff person, Chris Miller, if you comments or questions about th:
request.
Sincerely, Carl Levin l
