Dear Mr. Liu:

SUBJECT:

GL 88-01 CATEGORY E WELD INSPECTIONS - DUANE ARNOLD ENERGY CENTER (TAC M86747)

The NRC safety evaluation sent to Duane Arnold (DAEC) on May 31, 1990, for the implementation of Generic Letter 88-01 approved the DAEC commitment to inspect all Category E welds each refueling outage. However, the safety evaluation also stated GL 88-01 requirements were that 50% of Category E welds.had to be examined during the next refueling outage and all Category E welds be examined every two refueling outages.

Your [[letter::NG-93-2401, Informs That Util Intends to Modify Schedule for Insp of Category E Welds for Refueling Outage (RFO 12) Scheduled to Commence 930729 & Next Refueling Outage (RFO 13) for Remainder of 10-yr ISI Interval,Per GL 88-01 Requirements|letter dated June 10, 1993]], provided a revised schedule to inspect

}

Category E welds for the remainder of the 10-year inservice inspection interval.

You intend to examine the four Category E welds located on the A recirculation loop piping during the upcoming refueling outage (RF012) commencing July 29, 1993. The remaining five Category E welds are located on the B recirculation loop piping and these will be examined during the sub-sequent refueling outage (RF0 13).

DAEC has been examining all of the Category E welds each outage. The licensee indicates that no new IGSCC indications have been identified in these inspections.

The revised inspection of Category E welds remains within the requirements of GL 88-01 and the reduced inspection for refueling outage 12 is projected to have a dose savings of 12 man-Rem. The revised Category E weld schedule is acceptable to the staff.

Sincerely,

/s/
