The Commission was briefed by the NRC staff on the status of the design certification reviews effort.

The progress on passive plant testing at the Oregon 1R State facility, (2)

The details pertaining to the Design Control Document

guidance, (3)

A description of the code validation and data usage planned for the passive plant test' programs, and (4)

A copy of the SER chapter dealing with reliability and maintenance.

The Commission suggest,ed that the staff consider requesting the appli: ants to submit their material in an electronic format so as to cane the review process by improving documentation traceability and enhancing information searches.

NRR could solici: IRM assistance in acquiring the software and-methodology for processing the vast amount of information to be received during the design certification process.

The Commission suggested that the development of training programs for inspectors and revievers should be initiated now and that the resources of the NRC's Technical Training Center should be utilized.

The staff should-also. consider the use of expert systems to capture the knowledge and expertise that has been developed during the ongoing certification reviews.
