Regulatory Guide 1.97 - Boiling Water Reactor Neutron Flux Monitoring

Dear Sir:

l Vermont Yankee is in receipt of your letter dated April 29,1993 [ Reference (b)] which provides the Staff's conclusion that, foi current BWR operating license holders, the criteria of l NEDO-31558 are acceptable in lieu of the subject Regulatory Guide 1.97 criteria. Reference (b) -{ requested Vermont Yankee to notify the NRC, within 60 days of letter receipt, of the actions ] l planned and our schedule for implementation. Reference (b) was received by Verment Yankee on j May 5,1993. The purpose of this letter is to respond to your request. J Vermont Yankee will review our neutron flux monitoring instrumentation against the criteria of NEDO-31558 to determine whether we meet these criteria. Vermont Yankee was not a participant in the BWR Owners' Group efforts to produce NEDO-31558, but is in the process of making the necessary arrangements with the BWR Owners' Group to effect retroactive membership. This will afford us the opportunity to formally utilize this report in order the perform l the required review effort. Vermont Yankee also anticipates submittal of a proposed change to the Technical Specifications as discussed in Reference (b). Given our current workload in preparation for the l upcoming 1993 refueling outage, scheduled to begin on August 27,1993, Vermont Yankee l anticipates completion of the requested review work and submittal of our review conclusions to NRC, as requested in Reference (b), together with a proposed change to Technical Specifications, by December 1,1993. We trust that our plans and schedule to resolve this issue are acceptable to NRC. Should you have any questions regarding our plans or require additional information, please contact this office. Very truly yours, VFEMONT YANKEE NUCLEAR POWE,R CORPORATION 4~
