REVIEW COMMENTS ON " UNDERWATER INVESTIGATION OF NUCLEAR LAKE" We are providing comments on the report, " Underwater Investigation of Nuclear 4
Lake", prepared by Philip Undnn111.
The report is the outcome of an underwater search carried out by Radiation Technical Services, Inc. (RTS) in Nuclear Lake, Dutchess County, New York, during November 1992. The search was performed by divers from RTS, in order to locate, evaluate, and provide additional information as to the character of a number of " targets" in the lake.
We asked Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (0 RISE) to review this report. ORISE staff participated in the earlier investigations of the lake.
ORISE staff indicated that there may be pieces of metal (car parts, farm machinery, rolls of fencing, small (1-5 gallon) cans, etc.) in the shallower portions of the lake. We recommend that, if smaller metal objects were observed by divers, a discussion of these observations be provided in the report.
The report should also include information confirming the calibration of the specific instrumentation for the photons of uranium and plutonium, and providing the detection sensitivities for the anticipated contaminants.
Numerical survey results should also be included.
