Dear Mr. Selin,
We of the Global ArPnda for Environmen t al Artinn would urge you to deny LES' application to construct a uranium enrichment fairility in Homer, Louisiana.
The local communities of Forcut Cruve and Center Springs are both adamani.ly opposed
- f. o have this LES plant I nca t.ed in their backyard.
The issues of toxic waste disposal, contaminated water which will be disr.harged into the Lake Claiborne watershed (which supplies 40 homes with drinking water)
.-a n d the danger of UF6 pollutinn of the air ha ve-c o nih i n e d to create a strong opposition to the proicct.
We feel that there is an element of e nv i r onme n t.a l racism in the decision to place the plant in the midst of these two small black communi t.les, and ask you to serinn:]y consider the negative impacts involved in continuing w i t. h the project.
We would remind you, in addition, that there is currently a wo r ld wi de overesupply of utenium along with ihrinking demand.
Finally, we fear thet the same technology used in this facility may well be used to produce nuclear weapons.
The
- sa me centrifuge designs as are planned here have been discovered by United Nations investiuators in Iraq.
