The Commission
- was briefed by the NRC staff on the efforts for risk harmonization with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The Commission requested further information on and examples of passive and active institutional controls that have been used in the past to protect waste or other hazardous disposal sites from inadvertent intrusion.

The staff should follow the work going on in the risk community and, in particular, follow the efforts of the risk group that has been appointed under the clean Air Act which is working on the broader risk questions.
The staff should develop clear and consistent terminology for use in this area at the NRC and also with EPA.
For example, the use of words such as " limit", " goal" and " objective" should be clearly defined and consistently used.
