RELIEF REQUEST FOR APPROVAL TO PERFORM OUTLET N0ZZLE INSPECTIONS' DURING PERIOD THREE OF THE FIRST TEN-YEAR INTERVAL -

VIRGIL C. SUMMER NUCLEAR STATION, UNIT NO. 1 (TAC NO. M85660)-

By letter November 30, 1992, and supplemented by letter dated dated January. 29, 1993, South Carolina Electric & Gas Company submitted a request to perform the outlet nozzle safe end inspection, scheduled for the first period of the;;

j second ten-year inspection interval, eight months: ahead of schedule.

Carolina Electric & Gas Company further proposed that 100 percent of the" j

nozzle-to-vessel welds be inspected in the third period of the second ten-year-inspection interval and subsequent inspection intervals.

i The staff has reviewed your request and has determined that the proposed -

alternative is acceptable. The staff finds that the proposed alternative will provide an acceptable level of quality and safety, and authorizes its use y

pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3)(1). An evaluation of the request is enclosed.
