Dear Mr. DelGeorge:

-l

f

This refers to the inspection conducted by Mr. A. Dunlop of this office on

!

May 17-28, 1993. The inspection included a review of authorized activities

!

for your Braidwood Nuclear Power Station, Units 1 and 2. - At the conclusion of

the inspection, the findings were discussed with those members of-your staff.

identified in the enclosed report.

The areas examined during the inspection are identified in the report. These~

j

.

areas consisted primarily of a review of the Braidwood program for inservice

4

testing (IST) of pumps and . valves. Within these areas, the inspection

.

,

consisted of a selective examination of' procedures and representative records,

'

observations, and' interviews with personnel.

No violations of NRC requirements were identified during the course of this.

inspection.

'

l

One unresolved item is identified.in the report.

The item concerns stroke

l

timing power operated valves in one direction only when the valve has a safety '

{

function in both directions. This appears to be inconsistent with ASME

Section XI Code and NRC guidance issued with Generic Letter 89-04. .In

addition, we are concerned that neither your engineering personnel'nor your

quality verification process identified that a number'of. valves with safety

related functions had not been included in the IST program. You are requested

j

- to respond.to the unresolved item within 60 days of-your. receipt of.this

.

,

report.

Your response should include your evaluation of the issue and, if

1

.

applicable, your intended corrective action.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of.the Commission's regulations, a copy of:

this letter, the enclosure,'and your re'sponses to this letter will be placed.

in the NRC Public Document Room.
