Mr. Ivan Selin Chairman U.S. Nuclear Reg. Comm.
Washington,DC 20555 21 May 1993
Dear Mr. Selin,
I am writing to you with the hope that you will deny Louisiana Energy Service's bid to construct a uranium enrichment plant in Homer, Louisiana. Since you are probably very well aware of the facts surrounding this controversial project I shall not waste your precious time reiterating them at great length. Instead I shall present them as briefly as possible:
- the local communities of Forest Grove and Center Springs are very much opposed to the prcueet.
- these communities are predominantly black - could environmental racism played a role in the selection of the site? Was such a selection ethical?
- there are forty homes within 5 miles of the proposed facility that rely on wells for their drinking water. What is to be done in the event of contamination? There is also a significant population of elderly residents in the area.
- at the moment there is currently a worldwide surplus of enriched uranium, and the DOE's enrichment plants are operating at only 50% capacity. Why do we need another plant?
I urge you to deny LES's application on the basis of these facts. To build such a facility in such an area would be a tremendous blow to the local environment.
Sincerely, Th fu Chris Raymond Dept. of Physics Univ of New Mexico Albuquerque, NM 87131-1156
