June 14. 1993 Docket Nos. 50-321 and 50-366 Mr. W. G. Hairston, III Senior Vice President Nuclear Operations Georgia Power Company P. O. Box 1295 Birmingham, Alabama 35201
Dear Mr. Hairston:
SUBJECT:
RESPONSE TO NRC BULLETIN 92-01, " FAILURE OF THERMO-LAG 330 FIRE BARRIER SYSTEM" - EDWIN I. HATCH NUCLEAR PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2 (TAC NOS. M83882 AND M83883)
By the letters dated July 20 and September 25, 1992, you responded to NRC Bulletin 92-01 and Supplement I to the Bulletin for Hatch Nuclear Plant, Units 1 and 2.
Your responses stated that all Thermo-Lag insulation installations have been identified and compensatory measures have been implemented consistent with the Technical Specifications and the guidance provided in the Bulletin and Supplement. These compensatory measures consist of the use of fire watches in all areas containing Thermo-Lag insulation.
You also indicated that your long-term corrective actions to verify or restore f
fire barrier operability are being developed through an industry program being coordinated by NUMARC.
You have committed to apply the results of these efforts to the Thermo-Lag installations within the scope of the Bulletin and t
its Supplement when the program is completed.
The NRC staff has reviewed your responses and finds your program acceptable.
Please inform us by letter when all corrective actions have been completed.
Further NRC review, if any, will be performed by inspection or audit. This action closes TAC Nos. MS3882 and MS3883-.
Sincerely, i
