Response to NRC Bulletin No. 93-02, Debris Plugging of Emergency Core Cooling Suction Strainers
Dear Sir:
The purpose of this letter is to provide information in response to Reference b) which requests 1) identification of fibrous air filters or other temporary sources of fibrous material, not designed to withstand a LOCA, which are installed or stored in primary containment,2) taking any immediate compensatory measures which may be required to assure the functional capability of the ECCS, and 3) taking prompt action to remove any such material. This letter satisfies Reporting Requirements 1. and 2.
of Reference b).
Vermont Yankee has completed the requested actions and, to the best of our knowledge, we do not have any fibrous air filters inside primary containment or other temporary sources of fibrous material installed or stored in containment.
1he Vermont Yankee containment cooling units are filterless units, sintered bronze filters are used within the air system for air operated equipment in containment, and we have reviewed past containment closure records and find no indication of temporary fibrous material installed or stored in primary containment.
