May 18, 1993 The Honorable Marge Roukema United States House of Representatives Washington, D.C.

20515-3005

Dear Congresswoman Roukema:

Thank you for your letter dated February 16, 1993 forwarding a letter from the New Jersey Chapter of the Sierra Club which provided comments on a proposed rulemaking relating to siting criteria.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is proposing to amend its regulations to update the criteria used in decisions regarding power reactor siting, including geologic, seismic, and earthquake engineering considerations for future nuclear power plants. The proposed rule would allow NRC to benefit from experience gained in the application of the procedures and methods set forth in the current regulationn and to incorporate the rapid advancements in the earth sciences and earthquake engineering. As you may know, the proposed rule change was published in the Federal Register on October 20, 1992 for a public comment period ending.on June 1, 1993. The letter you forwarded will be docketed and fully evaluated along with all other public comment letters that relate to this rulemaking action.

Sincerely, JN es M. T or xecutive irector for Operations
