SUBJECT:
Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Unit Nos.1 & 2; Docket Nos. 50 317 & 50-318 Response to NRC Bulletin No. 93-02, Debris Plugging of Emergency Core Cooline Suction Strainers Gentlemen:
NRC Bulletin No. 93-02 requires each Operating Reactor Licensee to submit the following written reports: 1) a v ritten response stating whether the requested action to identify fibrous air filters or other temporary sources of fibrous material, not designed to withstand a I.oss-of-Coolant Accident (LOCA), which are installed or stored in containment has been or will be performed, and a written response stating whether the requested action to take any immediate compensatory measures which may be required to assure the functional capability of the Emergency Core Cooling System (ECCS) has been or will be performed, and 2) a report confirming completion of the requested actions.
Accordingly, Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BG&E) hereby provides the required reports in this response.
Baltimore Gas and Electric Company has taken action to identify temporary sources of fibrous materials which are stored or installed in Unit 1 and Unit 2 containments (heremafter referred to as containment). There are no permanently-or temporarily-installed sources of fibrous material in-containment which would interfere with the functional capability of the ECCS. Temporary sources of fibrous materials are not stored in containment during Modes 1,2,3, and 4. Fibrous material could be temporarily stored in containment for outage-related werk during Modes 5 and 6.
-However, prior to establishing containment integrity for entrance into Mode 4 from Mode 5, all temporarily-stored fibrous materials are removed from containment. A visual inspection of all accessible areas of the containment is performed prior to establishing containment integrity to verify that no items are present in containment which could be transported to the containment emergency.
sump and cause a loss of net positive suction head for the ECCS pumps during LOCA conditions.
%c visual inspection provides assurance that all temporarily-stored fibrous materials are removed from containment prior to entering Mode 4. Additionally, once per Refueling Interval, a visual inspection of the containment emergency sump is performed to verify that no debris is present in the containment emergency sump or on the trash racks or screen that surround the containment emergency sump. Both of these inspections are required by the Technical Specifications. Therefore, BG&E does not plan to take any additional measures to assure the functional capability of the ECCS.
