Waterford 3 SES Docket No. 50-382 License No. NPF-38 NRC Bulletin No. 92-01, Supplement 1 Response Status Update Gentlemen:

On September 29, 1992, Waterford 3 submitted a response (W3F192-0330) to NRC Bulletin No. 92-01, Supplement 1, " Failure of Thermo-Lag 330 Fire Barrier System to Perform Its Specified Fire Endurance Function". Waterford 3 is hereby providing a status update associated with that earlier response.

Conduct of hourly fire watches continues as compensatory' actions in those areas where Thermo-Lag 330 fire barriers are. installed. Comper atory actions will continue until the fire barriers are declared operable. There are no ampacity concerns associated with the remaining Thermo-Lag installations (seven fire dampers).

Thermo-Lag has been permanently removed from the electrical penetration (#107) mentioned in the bulletin supplement' response. The Thermo-Lag has been replaced with an alternate fire barrier system (HEMYC System).

The free standing Thermo-Lag wall mentioned in the bulletin supplement response is being replaced with an alternate fire barrier material (Promat fireproofing board). The estimated completion date for installation of the replacement fire barrier is July 16, 1993 (Design Change DC-3134).

l NRC Eulle' tin No. 92-01, Supplement 1

June 3. 1993 -1 Thermo-Lag has been removed from the side panels of the air handling unit [AH- i 13 (3B-SB)] partial enclosure. The Thermo-Lag side panels are being replaced with an alternate fire barrier material .(Promat fireproofing board). The ,

Thermo-Lag bottom panel on the air handling unit will be covered with an i alternate fire barrier system (HEMYC System). Estimated completion date for  :

this work (Design Change DC-3134) is July 16, 1993.

i The decisions to remove the Thermo-Lag from the electrical penetration, the free standing wall and the air handling unit enclosure were unrelated to present concerns regarding Thermo-Lag performance.

Disposition of the remaining Thermo-Lag applications (seven fire dampers) is still being evaluated. Entergy Operations, Inc. is participating in the industry program, coordinated by NUMARC, to provide generic testing and '

information necessary to determine and, where applicable, accomplish corrective actions. .The current goal is to complete a site specific evaluation of the remaining Thermo-Lag installations and submit our plans and schedule for corrective action within 30 days after the completion of the NUMARC industry program. In the meantime, compensatory actions will be continued until disposition is accomplished.

Very truly yours, M
