SUBJECT:
FOLLOWUP ON INDUSTRY PLANS FOR SUBMITTING AN EARLY SITE PERMIT APPLICATION This is to inform you about the status of industry plans to submit an early site permit (ESP) application since you participated at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) ESP Demonstration ~ Program (DP) Siting Conference. Last week, DOE extended its contract with the industry consortium in hope of identifying a prospective applicant for the next phases of the program.
We are not aware of any utility that plans to pursue the development and submittal of an ESP application at this time.
If a utility is not identified, we anticipate that the DOE program would be terminated or suspended.
The staff continues.to expend only limited resources on ESP activities.
We will keep the Commission informed of changes in the DOE and NRC programs.
After DOE makes a decision on continuing or terminating the ESP DP, the staff will prepare a status report and, if appropriate, will brief the Commission on the program schedule and NRC resources to be committed for regulatory and review activities.
