May 24, 1993 CHAIRMAN Mr. Sim R.

Shanks Radiation Safety Officer Georgetown University Hospital Office of Environmental Health and Safety Building D, Room 132 4000 Reservoir Road, N.W.

Washington, D.C.

20007

Dear Mr. Shanks:

Thank you for the briefing and tour of the Georgetown University Hospital radiation oncology facilities that you provided for me on April 30.

I was quite impressed with-your facilities and the professionalism of the radiation oncology staff.

The tour was a very educational and worthwhile experience for me personally.

I especially appreciated the candid review and assessment of the technical intricacies and regulatory requirements for the different radiation therapy devices in use.

As you may have heard, shortly after my visit I testified at a hearing before the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs on the regulation of the medical uses of radiation.

I have enclosed for your information a copy of the written testimony I submitted on behalf of the NRC.

Please accept my thanks for your gracious hospitality.

I hope you will convey to members of the University staff who planned or participated in the tour, particularly Dr. Azam Niroomand-Rad and Dr. James Rodgers, my sincere appreciation for their efforts and my high regard for the important work they are doing on a daily basis.

Sincerely, wdm Ivan Selin
