CHAIRMAN The Honorable James Folsom, Jr.

Governor of Alabama Montgomery, Alabama 36130

Dear Governor Folsom:

I am writing to-invite the State of Alabama's continued participation in the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's State Liaison Officer Program. As.you may know, in 1976 the NRC adopted a recommendation of State organizations, including the National Governors' Association, that we request each State to appoint a single person to act as liaison to NRC for the purpose of improving Federal / State cooperation. The NRC looks to the Governor-appointed State Liaison Officers to provide a communication channel between the States and the NRC, to be the key person in the State to keep the Governor completely informed on regulatory health and safety matters as appropriate to their interests and responsibilities, and to provide NRC with answers to questions posed to the States on particular issues.

Former Governor Hunt appointed Don C. Hines, Ph.D., Assistant Director, Department of Economic and Community Affairs, as Alabama's State Liaison Officer.

We will continue to work with Mr. Hines and will keep you informed of our programs and activities through this individual unless you inform us of a new choice. At the same time, we will maintain our ties to those State agencies with whom we have established relationships on specific issues.

I look forward to Alabama's continued participation in the NRC's State Liaison Officer program.

If you or your staff have any questions or wisn additional information, please contact Carlton Kammerer, Director of our headquarters' Office of State Programs, at (301) 504-2321, or Robert Trojanowski, our Region II State Liaison Officer, at (404) 331-5597.

Sincerely, ja Ivan Selin cc:
