Taft Environmental Awareness Movement -
The Taft School Watertown, CT 06795 y/p Yh Ivan Selin Nuclear Reguletory Commission Washington D.C.
20555
Dear Chairman Selin,
We write you out of our concern regarding the possible construction of a factory-to produce enriched uranium near Homer, Loulslana by the Louislana Energy Services (LES). LES is well aware of the potential danger that such a facility will pose on surrounding communities. It threatens the drinking water of 40 families who get their water from wells within a five-mile radius of the proposed construction site. The LES factory would produce 4000 tons of radioactive uranium-238 waste every year. Where i
will this hazardous waste be stored? Tornadoes are not an uncommon occurence in this region. Will the LES storage facility be capable of protecting nearby communities from radioactive waste if directly hit by.a tornado? Are you aware of the fact that more uranium-238 is produced than nuclear power plants can presently use? It should also be noted that, according to a recent national study, a high percentage of incinerators, toxic waste dumps, chemical plants, and other dangerous facllities are located in low-income, i
minority communities" This region in Louisiana falls into such a catogory.
Chairman Selin, it is your responsibility as a government official to prevent environmental abuse and discrimination in this country. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission was established by the United States Congress for the specific purp7se of regulating the liscensing and operation of commerclat facilities that produce or handle radioactive nuclear materials. This includes safeguarding the American publlc by preventing abuses within the sistem. As Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, it is your daty to act in the best interest of the people, including lower class and minority citizens.
