Dear Mr. Adams,

The purpose of this letter is to notify you of our intent to begin preliminary work at the U.S. Amiy Materials Technology Laboratory research reactor in preparation for the pending demolition. Any activities which prevent the demolition from extending into the winter months will greatly reduce personnel risk as well as demolition costs.

We feel that the tasks listed below are acceptable licensee activitics due to the fact that the building and structure will remain under the control of the licensee until formal license termination and that no radioactive material or substances will be introduced into the building. Please note that the building structure and integrity will be maintained until fonnal tennination of the license. .We intend to perform the following activities:

1. Installation of sheet piling outside of the containment building.

2. Installation of sheet piling, girders, and a protective cover around the electrical transfonner currently in the battery limit.

3. Selective core drilling of the reactor basement floor in order to take soil samples in the mud mat undemeath the structure. This sampling is to fulfill a prior commitment made to the State in our contmetor specifications.
