Introduction On May 26, 1993, the NRC Transportation Branch staff met with Nuclear Fuel Services, Inc. (NFS), in Rockville, Maryland. NFS requested the meeting to discuss the Model No. 40G-A package.
Discussion l
On February 3,1993, NFS submitted to the NRC an application for approval of the Model No. 40G-A package. On April 27, 1993, the NRC requested additional information.
In the meeting, NFS discussed their possible response to the NRC's comments.
The issue of whether the packages tested adequately and conservatively i
represented the actual package was discussed at the meeting. The void spaces in the test package were filled with sand, which could provide a cushioning effect. The packages that would actually be shipped, however, would not be filled with sand. The NRC suggested that NFS perform a drop test on a package that was not filled with sand.
NFS also presented the method they use to form the contents into 16"x16" bales of solid waste material and to verify that the contents are LSA. The NRC suggested that this method be discussed in the Operating Procedures. The NRC r
also suggested that the Operating Procedures be revised to prohibit shipment of bales with sharp corners or edges.
