OFFICE oF THE March 29, 1993 SECRETARY Mr. Michael Mariotte Executive Director Nuclear Information and Resource Service 1424 16th Street, N.W.

Suite 601 Washington, D.

C.

20036

Dear Mr. Mariotto:

Chairman Selin has asked me to respond to your letter of February 17, 1993, in which you expressed an interest in obtaining either 3.5 inch computer disks and/or CDROM disks containing various NRC documents, including Federal Register i

Notices of proposed rulemakings and SECY papers.

As Chairman Selin noted in your meeting with him, we are-interested in increasing public participation in NRC activities,.and one way we might accomplish this is through faster and wider availability of NRC communications.

NRC has two ongoing efforts which may interest you.

The staffLis now monitoring a Government Printing Office pilot project that has the potential to make Federal agency rules available through a Federal bulletin board.

If this project is. successful, NRC will seriously consider it for making proposed and final rules available to the public.

Second, a test is now underway to transmit certain NRC documents electronically to the NRC Public d

Document Room, initially for downloading to floppy disks for on-site users and perhaps later for service to'off-site users.

This.

.i project is expected to be initiated on a trial basis beginning in'

{

early April.

My staff and I would be pleased to meet with you, to discuss the availability of electronically transmitted-documents.

I will call you next week to arrange such'a meeting, at a time which is convenient for-you.

i The NRC appreciates your interest in improving communications q

between the Commission and the public interest community.

Sincerely,

/
