Through a newsletter published by Global Response. an environmental action network, I i
have learned that the NRC has received an application from the Louisiana Energy Services (LES) for permission to build a uranium enrichment plant in northwestern Louisiana. I am l
concerned about the emironmental and social impacts that such a plant will have on the area.
i As I understand it, the facility will convert natural uranium into fuel for nuclear power reactors and, in addition, produce aproximately 4000 tons of radioactive waste annually. This t
waste, which remains hazardous for millions of years, may be stored on the plant's 450 acre site. Such production puts local communities at risk to toxins in both the air and the water; polluted water will be discharged in the Lake Claiborne watershed, upon which nearby inhabitants rely for their drinking water.
The local communities of Forest Grove and Center Springs as well as the Citizens Against Nuclear Trash (CANT) are opposed to the construction of the plant. CANT, which is a coalition of national and regional groups, claims that building a nuclear facility in this area would be an act of environmental racism, for the peoples of the surrounding areas are economicaly and socialy disadvantaged.
The environmental threats that this plant poses, coupled with the worldwide overcapacity for producing enriched uranium seem to indicate that the facility is neither desirable or needed. I urge you to deny LES' application to construct a uranium enrichment facility in Homer, Imuisiana.
