Dear Mr. Selin,

Louisiana Energy Services, as you know, has submitted an application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for permission to build the United States' first privately owned uranium enrichment plant near the low-income, predominantly black communities of Forest Grove and Center Springs in Louisiana. We strongly urge you to advise the NRC licensing board to deny LES' application to construct its facility. The two communities are adamantly opposed to having the LES plant located in their backyard. A by-product of the enrichment process will be the production of approximately 4,000 tons of radioactive uranium-238 waste annually. This waste remains hazardous for millions of years. This waste will pollute the Lake Claiborne watershed which provides water for families within a five mile radius. There has long been a nationwide pattern of putting hazardous waste dumps and dangerous industrial operations in economically and politically disadvantaged communities. This environmental racism is unacceptable. You are in a position to make a positive decision and help protect the people for Forest Grove and Center Springs from having an unwanted, unnecessary, and dangerous uranium enrichment facility located within their communities.
