Dear Mr. Selin,
I am writing on a matter of great urgency to ask you to DENY LES' (Louisiana Energy Services) application to construct a uranium enrichment facility in Homer, Louisiana.
As you may know, the local communities of Forest Grove and Center l
Springs are adamantly opposed to having the LES plant located in their backyard.
I put to you the strong probability that there is an issue of environmental racism involved here in deciding to site the plant so near to the two small black communities.
There will be inordinate negative social and environmental impacts on the area with the production of 4,000 tons of radioactive byproducts (U-238) annually.
U-238 remains hazardous for millions of years.
Currently the DOE (Department of Energy) has enrichment plants I
operating at only 50% capacity.
Additionally, there is already a worldwide overcapacity for producing enriched uranium.
Please take a close look at this.
