Dear lir. Selin,
It has cone to our attention that Louisiana Energy Services has subnitted an application to begin construction of a uraniun enrichnent plant near the tuo co nnunities of forest Crove and Center Springs in northwestern Louisiana. We respect fully request that you deny LES permission to build this plant. Here are our reaso ns:
- 1) The citizens in the connunities affected have been so negatively inpact ed upon hearing of LES's plans that they have banded together, forming the Citizen s Against Huclear Tras's (CANT). This denonstrates a clear uneasiness and dounright suspicion of the notivts of LES, in a connunity of lower-income, predoninantly Afr ican American fanilies. With the knowledge we have about the extent of environment al racisn, thanks to the United Church of Christ's report ' Toxic Wastes and Race i n the United States", ue cannot allow yet another incidence of this insidious prac tice to go unchecked. I an sure that the HRC does not wish to be a party to this s ort of applied bigotry.
- 2) Huclear proliferation is very rightly a nain concern of the hRC, and fo r this reason, we find it dangerous that Urenco, a nenber of LES, is proposing the construction and use of additional centrifuges for spinning down uranium. These ar e potentially proliferative, and Urenco is already under suspicion for its alleged involvenent in augnenting the nuclear capabilities of Iraq.
Please refuse LES*s application. Strengthen the HRC's connitnent against e noironnental racisn and expand its vision on nuclear proliferation.
