I am writing to urge you to deny Louisiana Energy Services' applica-tion to construct a uranium enrichment facility in Homer, Louisiana.
The local communities of Forest City and Center Springs are adamantly opposed to having the LES plant in their backyard. A byproduct of the uranium enrichment process is the production of 4,000 tons of radioactive uranium-238 waste annually. This waste will, in all i
probability, be stored on the plant's site. In addition, polluting i
water from the plant will be discharged into the Lake Claiborne, a watershed upon which 40 homes are dependent. Finally, LES also plans to close and reroute the only road connecting Forest Grove and Center Springs.
In fact, the product is dangerous. The production of U-235 is the same

same technology used to produce nuclear weapons. There are reports that this design has been discovered by United Nations' investigators in Iraq. Finally, the product is unnecessary. The Department of Ener-gy's enrichment plants are only operating at 50% capacity. There is also a worldwide overcapacity. Less dangerous technologies currently under consideration look promising.
Again, I urge you to deny the LES application to construct a uranium enrichment facility in Homer, Louisiana.
