Louisiana Energy Services
Dear Mr. Selin:
I am writing to urge you to advise the Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensing board to deny Louisiana Energy Services' application to construct a uranium enrichment facility in Homer, LA.
The communities of Forest Grove and Center Springs are adamantly opposed to having the LES plant located in their backyard. The plant will have negative social impacts in that it would be located in underprivileged, minority communities that will be further deteriorated as LES plans to close and reroute the only road that services these locations.
The plan to build the plant in this area demonstrates environmental racism.
Please do not contribute to this problem.
The plant will have devastating effects on the Lake Claiborne watershed, in which 40 homes within 5 miles of the facility rely on wells for their drinking water.
In addition, a retirement community surrounds the shores of Lake Claiborne.
The potential contamination of the area is a concern of the residents.
Furthermore, the Department of Energy's enrichment plants are only operating at 50% of capacity, and the cost for LES' enriched uranium is higher than for the DOE's.
Please do all that is in your power to prevent the potential problems that would result from construction of this plant. Thank you.
