Ivan Selin, Chairman United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC (FAX: 301-504-1672)
W.
Howard Arnold, President Louisiana Energy Services, L.P.
Washington, DC (FAX: 202-467-5495)
Dear Sirs:
"Such callous disregard simply points out your company's arrogant contempt for the black communities of Forest Grove and Center Springs."
-- From a letter to Louisiana Energy Services signed by residents of Forest Grove.
This letter is in opposition to the construction of the United State's first privately-owned uranium enrichment plant near two low-income, predominantly black communities in rural Louisiana.
A by-product of the enrichment process at this plant will be approximately 4,000 tons of radioactive uranium-238 waste annually. U-238 remains hezardous for millions of years. In all probability the waste will be stored on the plant's 450 acre site.
The choice of the two predominantly black communities for the site is another example of ENVIRONMENTAL RACISM.
Both of you are in a position to make a positive decision and help protect these people from having unwanted and dangerous facilities located within their communities.
MR. SELIN - Please advise the NRC licensing board to DENY LES* application for construction. Take a closer look at the environmental racism involved in the decision to locate in the chosen site.
MR. ARNOLD-Please cancel the LES' plans to build the facility near the two black communities. How can your consortium justify pursuing this in the face of such adamant community opposition? We are already faced with a worldwide oversupply and shrinking demand for enriched uranium.
Gentleman thank you both for your attention and time, and I implore you to throw asido political prossure and seriously consider the ramifications of what is being forced on this community and it's people.
Sincerely, Richard Vach (904) 273-0518 887 Coral Reef Way Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. 32082 9305260262 930416 f
