Dear Chairman Selin:
We strongly urge the Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensing board to refuse the Louisiana Energy Service application to build a uranium enrichment plant in Homer, Louisiana. The residents of both affected communities, Forest Grove and Center Springs, are strongly opposed to having the plant as an unwelcome neighbor.
The facility will have very negative environmental and social impact on this area.
We were not born African-Americans, nor poor, but we cannot but feel that once again racism, this time environmental racism was a major, if not the decisive, factor in siting this plant which would so negatively impact two African-American communities.
And what will be done with the approximately 4,000 tons of radioactive waste? As you so well know U-238 has such a long half-life that it remains extremely hazardous for millions of years. We remember West Valley and other calamities that were " safe".
How and where do you plan to store it?
What safeguards against leakage over millions 01 years can you possibly guarantee?
We remember West Valley and other calamities that were supposed to be safe.
How can you justify the need for another enrichment plant?
Where will the enriched U-238 be used?
How can you safely ship the U-238?
There are many questions, but are there any, much less enough, good answers? We say 'no" and urge that you deny LES the desired license. Please let us know your decision and your reasons.
