Ivan Selin, Chairman United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission i
Washington DC 20555
Dear Mr. Selin:
The Louiciana Energy Services (LES) has submitted an i
application to your Commission for permission to build its plant near the communities of Forest Grove and Center Springs.
A byproduct of the enrichment facility will be the production of approximately 4,000 tons of radioactive uranium-238 waste annualy, which would be stored on the plant's 450 acre' site.
As part of the construction of this plant, LES also plans to close and reroute the only road that services Forest Grove and Center Springs.
Polluting water from the plant will be discharged i
into the Lake Claiborne watershed.
40 homes within 5 miles of the facility rely on wells for their drinking water.
Currently the Department of Energy's enrichment plants are only operating at 50% of capacity.
DOE is considering utilizing advanced technologies to enrich uranium which pose no proliferation l
threat.
1 The Citizens Against Nuclear Trash (CANT) and a coalition of national and regional groups, including the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, are opposed to the construction of the LES facility.
In addition, this site to be built in a predominantly black community that does not want the plant, is being seen as-another example of environmental racism.
With all of this in mind, please DENY THE LES APPLICATION TO CONSTRUCT A URANIUM ENRICHMENT FACILITY IN HOMER, LOUISIANA until they, can build one utilizing advanced J,echnologies which pose no proliferation or pollution threat.
Very Siricerely Ypurs, hh. $
