4/26/93 Chairman Selin:
I am writing to you in response to the proposed construction of the United States' first privately owned uranium enrichment plant near two low-income communities in rural Louisiana.
I urge you to advise the NRC licensing board to deny Louisiono Energy Services' application to construct the facility in Homer, Louisiana.
I remind you that the local communities of Forest Grove and Center Springs are adamantly opposed to having the LES plant located in their I
backyard. Not only would the plant contaminate the wate/ and air in that community,it is completely unnecessary. Current DOE facilities I
are running at only 50% of capacity, there is already a worldwide i
overcapacity for producing enriched uranium, and the cost for LES' enriched uranium is higher than for the DOE's.
The oroposed pl ant would also utilize technology that con be used io j
produce the highly enriched uranium needed to make nuclear weapons.
Given that DOE is looking into technologies that pose no such threat, I see no reason whatsoever to construct this picnt.
l Please take a close look at this issue before making your decision.
Sinperely, i
