Mr. Jacques Roy:n, Deputy Head j
Ne' lear Safety Division 0.D Nuclear Energy Agency Le Seine St-Germain 12, Boulevard des Iles 92130 Issy-les-Moulineaux France
Dear Mr. Royen:
Your letter of March 19, 1993, to Mr. W. T. Russell, requested NRC input regarding the goals, schedule, and approach for the proposed 1994, "Special Issue CNRA Meeting on the Closure of the Severe Accident Case for Evolutionary Reactors."
I have been designated as the NRC point of contact for this special meeting.
I share your view that such a meeting would have a significant benefit for resolution of severe accident issues.
I have designated Mr. John Kudrick of our Containment Systems and Severe Accident Branch as the NRC manager responsible for coordinating NRC's preparation for this meeting.
NRC has placed a contract with the Brookhaven National Laboratory to provide a limited level of technical support for the meeting preparations. We will also receive support from our Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research to prepare for the meeting.
We have given some thought to the broad outline of a meeting agenda (Enclosure 1).
I believe the scope should include all aspects of the resolution process.
We should deal with the technical as well as the regulatory questions.
Moreover, by the time of the meeting, we should be in a position to discuss individual case studies, including the resolution of severe accident issues for the General Electric Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR).
I look forward to more details of the proposed meeting.
Please feel free to contact Mr. Kudrick directly at telephone number (301) 504-2871.
Sincerely, ORIGINAL SIGNED BY A. C.THADANI Ashok C. Thadani, Director Division of Systems Safety and Analysis Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation
