USE OF DECOMMISSIONING FUNDS
Dear Mr. Fairtile:
In Reference (b), Yankee Atomic Electric Company (YAEC) requested that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approve YAEC's use of decommissioning funds for the planned removal of the steam generators, pressurizer, and reactor internals. In Reference (c), YAEC provided additionalinformation regarding the estimate for returning the Yankee Nuclear Power Station to a SAFSTOR condition during the planned component removal project.
On April 7,1993, the Staff requested additional information regarding the estimated cost of the component removal project, the duration of the project, and the projected fund balance at the end of the project. The following information is provided in response to the Staff's request.
The duration of the component removal project with regard to use of decommissioning funds is fifteen months (April 1993 through June 1994). The total cost of the project is approximately S30 million.
As previously stated in Reference (c), the YNPS decommissioning trust fund balance is $74.6 million (as of the end of February 1993).
During the duration of the project, YAEC will collect approximately $33.1 million for the YNPS decommissioning trust fund. This figure does not include earnings on the existing menies in the fund.
