WASHINGTON D.C. 20555 y

February 23, 1993 CHAIRMAN Ms. Elizabeth Verville Senior Coordinator U.S.

Department of State Washington, D.C.

20520

Dear Ms. Verville:

I have received your letter of January 29, 1993, requesting a detail of an NRC employee to work in the Senior Coordinator's office on international nuclear safety assistance issues.

Although I continue to believe that international nuclear assistance is an important element in U.S.

foreign policy, the NRC is currently reevaluating its personnel strength and commitments in light of the President's recent directive to reduce Federal employment.

Under these circumstances, I regret that the NRC will be unable to provide assistance in the form of a non-reimbursable detail to the Department of State at this tine.

Sincerely, g,4 Ivan Selin
